The Tibetan boy Tulku (or ‘Lama Reincarnation’) Tenzin Tosam Rinpoche faces the viewer and his tutor Gen Pagdo stands behind. The photograph was taken at Rato Dratsang Monastery in Karnataka, India, one of a series of studies of Tulkus by Martine Franck (1938-2012). A member of the Magnum group of photographers, she was married to Henri Cartier-Bresson.
