Modern Chinese Paintings: The Reyes Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

Xu Fu, a painter of plants and animals rather than landscapes, is renowned for depicting popular subjects in a disciplined manner, and his skill in doing so is evident here. Squirrels and ornamental goldfish are the subjects with which he is most closely associated. Hua Yan (1682-1756) was one of the painters known as the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, from whom the Shanghai School artists drew inspiration. Yangzhou is also Xu Gu's native town.
