Li Guixin was born in Huizhou, Guangdong province. He was a friend of the two Lingnan School painters Gao Jianfu (1879-1951) and Gao Qifeng (1889-1933). He was one of the founders of the Yiyuan Art Society. Li also taught painting in the No.3 Middle School in Huizhou, Guangdong.
The inscription on the painting reads ‘In the style of Huanghe Shanqiao’. Huanghe shanqiao is one of the alternative names of Wang Meng (1308-1385), a prominent landscape painter in the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368). Wang Meng often used “rope” brushstrokes to produce areas of dense texture combined with complex patterns. He used dry, thick ink to depict dense woods on mountains. These techniques are also evident in this fan painting.
