Lai Shaoqi was from Puning county, Guangdong province. He studied art in Li Yanshan’s (1898-1961) Municipal Art School in Guangzhou and was originally a print artist. Lai built up his career mainly in east China in the 1940s when he was also involved in revolutionary work. His landscape paintings often depict Huangshan (Mount Huang) in Anhui province and this composition is typical. The square style of calligraphy is inspired by the 18th century Yangzhou painters Zheng Banqiao (1693-1765) and, particularly, Jin Nong (1687-c.1764).
