Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

Large, stylized, flowering trees, with small tendrils ending in bunches of ?grapes, as in Cat. no. 821 [EA1990.823]. The design is white against a red ground, with some of the larger forms filled with red as well. Details are brown.

It seems that the mordant for the faint brown outlines of the large trees was block-printed, and that a resist was then applied, possibly drawn by hand. The mordant for dark brown details was added, and the textile was dyed red in an immersion bath.
