kufic
A term denoting various styles of angular Arabic script. Emerged in the early centuries of Islam, kufic soon became the preferred hand to copy holy texts.

The Newberry Collection of Islamic Embroideries
The design is very fragmentary, possibly showing the remains of a stylized kufic interlace with plant finials, as in EA1984.49.
The remains of prick marks in place of the dark red embroidery allows for the partial reconstruction of the design. Threads are couched down over surface satin filling stitches.
