The Newberry Collection of Islamic Embroideries

Inscription band at right angles to the selvedge, oval cartouches with inscription surrounds and flower centres.

The inscription band reads 'al-'izz wa'l-baqa': glory and eternity, i.e. an indication of good wishes as popular in the Ayyubid and early Mamluk period. There are remains of tracing around the cartouches, revealing that originally they had an elaborate frame. The couching technique is thread couched by itself.
