The Newberry Collection of Islamic Embroideries
Three rectangles, the two outer ones in blue, the central one with traces of brown embroidery. The design shows a grid of diagonal lines, each compartment containing a stylized letter reading 'ali', which could indicate a Fatimid origin. The use of pattern darning running stitch, on the other hand, is usually only associated with the Mamluk period. The blue bands have borders of stylised flowers.
The fragment is made up of three separate bands sewn together with a flat seam (run-and-fell), and with a rolled hem along one side.
