The sketch on this page opening was drawn in the vicinity of Longyang Gorge, where the cliffs rise more than 200 metres above the Yellow River. Xu Bing visited the region in 1985 and again in 1986. His sketchbooks from that time include drawings of local nomadic people in addition to landscapes.
