The famous Thousand Buddha Caves at Dunhuang in Central Asia were drawn by many well-known artists of the mid-20th century. Xu Bing’ s 1984 drawing retains aspects of the French- and Soviet-influenced styles of his schooldays and late teens and includes new methods of his own. Areas of granulation near the centre of the composition were created by his placing grains of the Gobi Desert sand beneath the paper on his drawing board.
