This rural kitchen represents the simplicity of Xu Bing’s preferred subject matter. It compares more than any other of his drawings with the appearance of the French 19th century Barbizon school artists whose works he had seen exhibited in Beijing two years previously. The drawing was included in Xu Bing’s 1981 degree project and exhibited in 1988 in Nuremberg.
