This hanging depicts the red-painted ‘Sacred Bridge’ near the entrance to the Tōshōgū Mausoleum at Nikkō, a popular tourist spot. The Tōshōgū is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868. This design was copied from a photograph, probably taken before 1902, when the bridge was rebuilt with solid stone girders. (Exhibition number 30)
