These silk hangings came from Althorp, the Northamptonshire home of the Spencer family, where they were used as bedcovers. The subjects may be drawn from Japanese or Chinese legend. The stylized depiction of water and rocks seen here would have appealed to Victorian customers, who admired the freedom with which Japanese artists used images from nature to create decorative designs.
