Although tigers are not native to Japan, as a symbol of strength and courage, they have been a popular subject of Japanese art for centuries. This small embroidery panel, less sophisticated than some of the other examples in the exhibition, nevertheless makes clever use of layers of stitches to build up the texture of the tiger’s fur.
