Mir ‘Ali Shir Nava’i was the vizier and chief poet at the court of Sultan Husayn Bayqara (1468-1506), a great-grandson of the Mongol ruler Timur and an outstanding patron of literature and book arts. Written in Chagatay Turkish, Nava’i’s Khamsa (‘Quintet’) is a collection of five epic poems of strong didactic character. About three centuries earlier, Nizami of Ganja wrote another, more celebrated, Quintet which inspired Nava’i’s work, as well as a number of other versions that flourished over the centuries.
