This sumptuous double-page illumination in blue, black, and gold marks the start of a copy of the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam. Written down around AD 650, the Qur’an gathers the revelations received by the Prophet Muhammad from God during his life. Unlike other sacred texts such as the Bible, which often include figurative paintings, the Qur’an is exclusively decorated with abstract motifs. The depiction and use of images is in fact prohibited by Islam in religious contexts, and is therefore primarily documented in secular settings.
