Nakamura Tokizō V as the kept mistress Otomi

  • Description

Nakamura Tokizō V (born 1955) is a well known onnagata, specializing in female roles. In traditional kabuki, all of the roles are played by men, who are trained to create a larger-than-life femininity by emphasizing and stylizing feminine movements and gestures. Here the actor plays Otomi, the mistress of a gang leader who falls in love with the son of a wealthy merchant. As with most portraits of onnagata, the actor's masculinity is obvious despite his feminine costume and wig.
