glaze, porcelain

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

  • porcelain

    Ceramic material composed of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar which is fired to a temperature of c.1350-1400⁰c. The resulting ceramic is vitreous, translucent, and white in colour.

    The Barlow Collection

    The shallow bowl has somewhat rounded conical sides, and a small tapering foot with a low footring. The rim is cut into six lobes, the centre is clearly marked. The inside is carved with a large medallion of flower scrolls on a ground of combed stippling with three large blooms among stylized leaves, a wide band near the rim was left plain and the outside is also undecorated. The fine, translucent glaze has a faintly blue tinge, and leaves the central patch of the base free, where the white body has discoloured a light brown.
