Although their names are provided in the seal located next to their faces, these two masks are designed for the audience to recognize the characters instantly. The ‘Tattooed Monk’ Lu Zhishen is depicted in his monk’s costume with a spade. The red face and white beard of Huang Gai suggest that he is a faithful old official. The figures are cut out and then dyed with bold colours, which is unusual for papercuts.
