The identification of Mao with the sun, and by extension sunrise, was a central element in the personality cult that preceded the beginning of the Cultural Revolution in 1966. The East is red is the first line of a song ‘The East is red, the sun is rising, China brought forth a Mao Zedong…’ that was played throughout the country at dawn and sunset each day for about a decade.
