Common Crane (Grus grus)

Description
A medium-sized crane species, the Common Crane has a wide distribution throughout Europe and Asia and commonly winters in north India and Pakistan. According to the inscription, this specimen in Lady Impey’s aviary was measured at 4 feet 6 inches (1.37 m.) from its bill to the ground. Zain ud-Din portrays it with head lowered against its breast, its orange eye creating a focal point among the subtle pale or dark grey and black tones of the plumage and legs.
