Miyun Reservoir near Beijing was built between September 1958 and September 1960 and is the biggest artificial lake in Asia. To the northwest of its main dam, called Baihe, there is a mountain called Wuzuolou, literally ‘five pavilions’. This refers to five watchtowers on the Great Wall as depicted by Qian Songyan in this painting.
