The inscription on the original painting reads: ‘On the Banks of the Yangzi River, summer 1973, painted in Nanjing Petro-chemical Plant, Song Wenzhi’, and is followed by the artist’s seal. A second seal quotes the opening line of a well-known poem by Mao Zedong ‘This land with so much beauty aglow’.
