The title quotes Mao Zedong’s poem Swimming composed in June 1956: ‘A bridge will fly to span the north and south / Turning a deep chasm into a thoroughfare’. At that time Mao visited Changsha and Wuhan, and swam in the Yangzi River while the Wuhan Yangzi River Bridge (completed in October 1956) was still under construction.
