This photograph was taken in Hangzhou by the well-known photographer Qian Sijie. Qian was assigned by the New China Agency to follow and document Mao’s tour to Hangzhou. His depiction of Mao in a bamboo grove suggests an association with the lives of traditional scholars in China’s past.
