Nothing is known of the artist who has painted this lotus plant with strength and vitality, the delicate flower rising above a luxuriant growth of leaves. The lotus is associated with Buddhism and is symbolic of purity and enlightenment, since it pushes up through muddy water to be pristine when it opens. The pink flower in particular represents the historical Buddha.
