Description
Chen Zizhuang, also known as Shihu in his late years, was from Rongchang, Sichuan province. He studied traditional painting, calligraphy and seal carving, and was especially interested in archaic scripts. In the 1950s he developed his own style in the belief that the strokes of brushwork in painting should be the same as in calligraphy.

Modern Chinese Paintings: The Reyes Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
This simple yet uncharacteristically monumental landscape, signed with the artist's alternative name Shi Hu, depicts the notoriously treacherous Jianmen pass in his native Sichuan province. It was through this pass that the Tang emperor Minghuang (r.712-56) fled from his capital; the perils of the landscape are recorded in some of the most famous Tang dynasty poems and paintings.
