Calligraphy after ancient bronzes and seals

Description
The characters read fenfa tuqiang and are written in the style associated with ancient bronzes and seals. The phrase translates ‘exert oneself to make the country strong’ and was used by Mao Zedong in the mid-1960s.

Modern Chinese Paintings: The Reyes Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
Wu Zuoren was a pupil of Xu Beihong (1898-1953) and trained in Paris and Brussels. His western technique is always evident in his work and he practised calligraphy chiefly to improve his brushwork. The present example is in archaic style and reads fen fa tu qiang, a four-character phrase meaning "to go all out to make the country strong".
