The juxtaposition of strong splashed colours in this painting derives from Liu Haisu’s experience with oils when he trained in Europe. Mount Huang was his favoured subject in his later years. The inscription reads: ‘Painted by Liu Haisu at his tenth visit to Shixun gang [literally ‘Bridge of Stone Shoots’] on Mount Huang, at the age of 93.’
