Chinese Paintings in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

Gai Qi was born in Xiyu, west China but as an artist was active in Songjiang (now Shanghai) in Jiangsu. His subject matter included figures, Buddhist subjects, beauties and plants, though he was also a prolific landscape painter; in 1816 he illustrated the novel Hong lou meng (Dream of the Red Chamber). He was an accomplished poet, favouring the ci rhyming form, and often included his own compositions on his paintings.
