Frieze tile with inscription and birds

Description
This tile belongs to a group of tiles associated with the shrine of the Sufi master Abd al-Samad in Natanz, Iran. The birds were defaced at a later stage, when their presence was probably felt inappropriate for a religious building.

fritware, lustre, underglaze painting

fritware
Ceramic material composed of ground quartz and small quantities of clay and finely ground frit (frit is obtained by pouring molten glass into water).

lustre
Metallic sheen obtained by applying a mixture of metallic oxides onto an already glazed ceramic that is refired at a reduced atmosphere.

underglaze painting
Painting applied to ceramic material before a transparent, or monochrome or coloured glaze for Islamic objects, is applied. The technique was initially developed in China.
