Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
A continuous design of plants related to the pattern in Cat. no. 1107 [EA1990.1114]. As in Cat. no. 1113 [EA1990.1120], the stylized plants have a surround of white lines. Here the plants are red, white, and blue against a red background. This is filled with white tendrils and small bunches of fruit.
Stitching along the selvedge. For both red and blue, the reverse shows more dye saturation than the surface. There is no evidence of block repetition. A fragment with identical design was found at Quseir al-Qadim (see Vogelsang-Eastwood 1990). The radiocarbon test on this textile had a result of 1450 CE+/- 50.
