Tsuba depicting Minamoto Yoshitsune fencing with Yūjōbō

  • Literature notes

    Rounded oblong; in sharp sunk relief a rocky landscape with the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune being taught fencing by Yūjōbō, the King of the Tengu; at the back, conifers, clouds and a waterfall.

    Signed: Chōyō HNJ Tomomichi (as 394 [EAX.10394]) with kakihan [Japanese text] (the latter a rare feature on Chōshū guards).

    Detailed work, but somewhat coarse.
