Bottle with green glaze

    The bottle has a slender, elongated body tapering towards a tall waisted neck, and flaring very slightly at the base, which is recessed, surrounded by a broad footring. The coarse hard pottery bears a white slip and a bright green glaze which ends halfway down the sides, with small drops running down somewhat further. The lowest part and the base were left free of glaze and show the buff-coloured biscuit.

earthenware, glaze, lead glaze, slip

  • earthenware

    Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1000-1200⁰c. The resulting ceramic is non-vitreous and varies in colour from dark red to yellow.

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

  • lead glaze

    A glaze to which lead oxide is added as flux to lower its melting point.

  • slip

    A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.
