Greenware bowl with lotus petals in the style of Guan ware

  • loan
  • Literature notes

With its crackled green glaze, this bowl is intended to copy a piece of guan (‘official’) ware of the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279) from Zhejiang province. Yet, its body colour is not correct for pieces from this area, its glaze is too dark and unpleasantly muddy, and its profile overly emphasizes the flare of the rim.

The rounded bowl has a widely flaring rim and a very low tapering foot, the outside is moulded with a rank of lotus petals, obscured under the thick opaque, dark green crackled glaze, which fully covers the piece, except for the footring. The footring shows a dark brown biscuit, which also shines through the glaze at the rim.
