Explore the bold and colourful imagery found on posters and other items from this revolutionary period.
The slogan on this poster reads ‘Wait in Preparation for the Enemy, Annihilate All Intruders!’, referring to the outbreak of a Sino-Soviet border conflict in March 1969 commonly known as the Zhenbao Island incident. At this time, the whole country was called out by Mao Zedong to prepare for war, in particular nuclear attack from U.S.S.R.. In December 1972, Mao claimed that all people and institutions should ‘deeply dig caves, extensively store rice, and never seek hegemony’.
