  • Description

Luo Er’chun (born 1930) graduated from the Suzhou Academy in 1951 as one of the last pupils of the French trained oil painter Yan Wenliang (1893-1988). After working in the People’s Fine Art Publishing House, he became a professor in the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1964. By the early 1980s, he was already painting canvases of rural life that seemed to sweep away the dust of decades of conventional Chinese oil painting. They feature vibrant colour and usually demonstrate echoes of post-impressionism, with the figures often stylized or distorted. This painting was a gift from the artist to Michael Sullivan (1916-2013) in 2009.
