Clear Sounds in the Landscape

Description
The dark ink and full, almost decoratively balanced, composition are typical of Li Keran’s landscapes. His studio Shiniu literally means ‘to learn from the buffalo’. The inscription reads: ‘The rain stops suddenly, and it clears up; the mountain is blue, and the sounds are lively.’

Modern Chinese Paintings: The Reyes Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
The dark wet ink and full, almost decoratively balanced composition are typial of Li Keran's landscapes. In addition to landsapes, Li is particularly known for paintings of herdboys and buffalo, after which his studio Shiniu Tang "Hall of learning from the buffalo" takes its name.
