The black-hatted 13th Karmapa Lama sits enthroned. The 2nd Karmapa (1204-1283) had been the first of the Tulkus (or ‘Lama Reincarnations’) in Tibet. This thangka was painted during the 13th Karmapa’s lifetime (1733-1797) as he holds the vase containing the nectar of immortality. His teacher was the 8th Tai Situ Lama, seen in the previous painting [EA1991.181]. These thangkas are in the Karma Gadri style, showing Chinese influence in landscape and colouring.
