Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

Ceramic material composed of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar which is fired to a temperature of c.1350-1400⁰c. The resulting ceramic is vitreous, translucent, and white in colour.

The Barlow Collection
The jar has an ovoid body on a narrow trumpet-shaped foot and a wide flaring neck. The rim is shaped in six shallow lobes, emphasized by radiating ribs on the inside, and carved lines on the outside. The body is densely carved with an undulating foliage scroll, and the foot is plain. The transparent glaze has a light blue tinge and fully covers the piece except for the base, where the light brownish-burnt biscuit is visible under thick black, brown and white grit, and parts of the firing support.
