Discover the arts of the Edo period (1600-1868) from porcelain to lacquer to painting.
Around 1830, the print designer Hiroshige (1797-1858) travelled the Tōkaidō Road and made sketches that were turned into a woodblock print series. This was such a huge success that it created a new demand for landscape prints and inspired other artists to illustrate the Tōkaidō. Kunisada, who specialized in designs of actors and beautiful women, used many of Hiroshige's Tōkaidō designs for the backgrounds in Tōkaidō series of his own. The actor depicted here is Ichikawa Ebizo V, in the role of Musashibo Benkei.
