  • Description

Huang Zhongfang (born 1943) was born in Shanghai to a family with a great interest in, and a substantial collection of Chinese painting. The family moved to Hong Kong in 1948, where Huang studied painting under Gu Qingyao (1901-1978), who had been his mother’s teacher in Shanghai. After studying in London, he returned to Hong Kong and founded the Hanart Gallery. Later he returned to painting full-time.

This handscroll was given to Khoan (1919-2003) and Michael Sullivan (1916-2013) when they visited Hong Kong in 1969, and is inscribed by Huang and his father Huang Baoxi (active 20th century), who was a collector. The inscription added by Zhongfang reads ‘Clouds are far, reminiscence is deep in my heart. Painted in January of a jiyou year in Youdeyan Studio.’ The inscription added by his father reads ‘[I] asked my son Zhongfang to write this small scroll, inscribed with a poem by Tao Qian [died AD 427], for Mr and Ms Sullivan to correct.’
