Maharaja Raj Singh of Sawar in a garden arcade

  • loan
  • Description

A flower in his hand, Raj Singh of Sawar (r.1705-1730) appears against a pale green ground as if appearing at a palace jharoka window. But the arch which frames him is part of an arcade in a pleasure garden with a fountain, water-course and flowering shrubs. The Raja is attended by half-sized maids bearing porcelain wine-flasks and a peacock-feather fan.
