Modern Chinese Paintings: The Reyes Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

Shi Lu took up his name at the age of 21 from the 17th-century painter Shi Tao and the 20th-century socialist Lu Xun, having renounced his landowning literati background. His reputation as an artist is that of eccentric genius. Many of his paintings, particularly those on rustic themes, are in the black and red colours seen here; the palette subsequently acquired political symbolism, and was used for landscapes by many artists in the early 1960s.
