Modern Chinese Paintings: The Reyes Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

Early in his career Chen Zhifo was interested in ornament and design and his paintings, particularly those produced between 1935 and 1949, are chiefly in the decorative, meticulous style associated with Song (960-1279) court painting. The composition of this painting and the use of opaque pigments may be compared to porcelain decoration, a subject on which Chen had previously published, while the intermingling of colours on the branches is a modern technique.
