The Maidservant Hatsu

  • Description

In 1842 the Japanese government passed laws banning prints of courtesans and geisha. This encouraged artists to depict other kinds of women. This series shows women from history who are all famous for their loyalty. The rectangular cartouche in the top left-hand corner of each print tells the story of the woman shown.
