Chinese Paintings in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

Huang Zhou was born in Li Xian, Hebei province. He started painting at an early age as a pupil of Zhao Wangyun (q.v.). In 1955 became a professional painter, having spent six years in the People's Liberation Army as a reporter in the northwest border region; the national minority peoples of that area became a leading subject in his paintings. His interest in early paintings resulted in a fine collection of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing works.
