Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
Bands of rosettes, parallel and at right angles. One band has eight-petalled rosettes set into a beaded frame, similar to Cat. no. 508 [EA1990.515]; parallel to it is another band that treats the same motif very differently: the beaded roundel is several circles deep, but it also is delicately set, and the tendrils that fill the spandrels are fine and intricate. This band also continues in a band at right angles, and at the corner is a square with an eight-petalled flower, arranged to appear as a quatrefoil.
It is possible that the manufacture of this textile involved both resist- and mordant-stamping. The band of rosettes similar to Cat. no. 508 [EA1990.515] is saturated with dye on the reverse, while the intricately ornamented bands do not penetrate to the reverse with their patterns. The corner square is similar to a fragment found at Quseir al-Qadim (see Vogelsang-Eastwood 1990: Cat. no. 35).
