    The Barlow Collection

Bottles of various sizes, related to the present pair, have been recovered from a hoard in Suining county Sichuan province, presumably buried around the time the Mongols invaded the area, in 1234, and before the town fell, in 1242.

The small pear-shaped vases have a low depressed body on a wide straight foot, and a tall slender neck, slightly tapering towards the wide everted, incurved rim. The neck has two raised ribs like bamboo nodes, and the body three further raised ribs around the shoulder. The matt blue-green glaze is thickly applied, leaving only the footring free. The stoneware has turned a reddish brown where it was exposed in the firing, and is grey where it was covered with glaze.
