Chinese Prints 1950-2006 in the Ashmolean Museum

I like to indulge myself with the oriental characteristic, the freedom and flexibility of shuiyin (water-soluble colour-printed) woodcut.

In 1989, Fang Limin graduated from the Education Department of the China National Academy of Fine Arts. He began postgraduate study at the Printmaking Department in 1996. After three years he gained his Master’s degree and was offered a teaching position at the Academy. He is currently the deputy head of the Printmaking Department there. Fang’s early work emphasizes historical themes and earthy scenes of rural life. His water-soluble colour-printed woodcuts exemplify a spontaneity and unaffected perception of the traditional woodcut printing technique, and a fusion of tradition and modern, realism and abstraction.
